Surroundings

Velfjord belongs to the Brønnøy municipality in the southern part of the Nordland County, thus quite in the south of what is referred to as Northern Norway. Hommelstø is located 33 km east of the municipality center Brønnøysund with its 4500 inhabitants, harbour and airport with direct connection to Trondheim and Oslo. Velfjord is a thinly populated part of the area with less than 1000 inhabitants spread throughout an area of 800 square kilometers. Hommelstø is the local centre with a population of 400. In other words, the wilderness is very close indeed. There are large areas here with no signs of civilization whatsoever.

The region has a stable employment in stable companies - mostly very small scale, but also a couple of larger ones in mining, transport, fishfarming and oil. The government is also a large employer. The population is therefore stable and growing  - a rather unusual trait in Northern Norway.
